AI Board’s Inaugural Meeting Held by Commission in Brussels
The Commission is hosting the inaugural meeting of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Board in Brussels, following the AI Act’s entry into force on 1 August. This session signifies a crucial step in the EU’s commitment to establishing a robust framework for AI governance. High-level representatives from the Commission and all EU Member States are discussing strategies to enhance AI development and adoption within the EU. Observers include the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and EEA/EFTA representatives from Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland. The EU AI Office serves as the Secretariat for the AI Board.
Today’s agenda focuses on organizing the AI Board and adopting its rules of procedure. Key discussions include updates on EU AI policy, the GenAI4EU initiative, and international AI activities. Additionally, there will be a progress update on the Commission’s first deliverables related to the AI Act’s implementation. An exchange of best practices for national approaches to AI governance and AI Act implementation will also take place.
The primary aim of the Commission and Member States is to ensure a robust and timely setup of the AI governance framework. This framework is designed to facilitate effective participation from Member States and ensure the successful implementation of the AI Act. This meeting builds on the groundwork laid during a preparatory session hosted by the Commission on 19 June.
The AI Board’s establishment marks a significant step in the EU’s efforts to lead in AI governance. By fostering collaboration among Member States and aligning on best practices, the EU aims to position itself at the forefront of AI development and regulation.
