AI Office to Start Drafting General-Purpose AI Code of Practice
The drafting process for the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice will commence with the kick-off plenary on September 30. This online event will see participation from nearly 1000 organizations and individuals worldwide who have expressed interest in contributing to the first General-Purpose AI Code of Practice. The AI Office is currently verifying the eligibility of these applicants based on submitted and publicly available information, with participation confirmations to follow.
The Code of Practice will clarify the AI Act rules for providers of general-purpose AI models, particularly those with systemic risks. A multi-stakeholder consultation will inform the drafting process, allowing all stakeholders to express their views on the topics covered. Submissions for this consultation are due by September 18. The AI Office will appoint chairs and vice-chairs from among interested independent experts to lead four working groups, responsible for synthesizing these submissions and developing the first draft of the Code.
The drafting process will include four rounds, with the first draft shared in the second plenary. After nine months, the final version of the Code will be presented at a closing plenary in April and subsequently published. This iterative process aims to create a comprehensive Code that integrates various submissions while ensuring robust implementation of the legal framework. Post-publication, the AI Office and the AI Board will assess the Code’s adequacy and publish their findings.
The AI Office is committed to an inclusive and transparent process. The final Code of Practice will reflect a balanced and well-informed approach, ensuring that the legal framework is effectively implemented and adhered to by all relevant stakeholders.
