Commission Adopts eID Wallet Rules for EU Digital Identity
The European Commission has made significant progress in establishing the European Digital Identity (eID) Wallets through the adoption of rules for their core functionalities and certification. This initiative is part of the broader European Digital Identity Framework, aimed at enabling Member States to develop their own digital wallets by 2026. The implementation of these wallets will facilitate seamless cross-border digital interactions within the European Union.
Four implementing regulations have been introduced to ensure uniform standards, specifications, and procedures for the technical functionalities of the eID wallets. These regulations cover aspects such as data formats for cross-border use of digital documents and measures to guarantee the reliability and security of the wallets. The goal is to ensure interoperability across the EU while safeguarding personal data and privacy. Data will be stored locally, allowing users to control what information they share, with zero tracking or profiling. A privacy dashboard will provide transparency on information sharing.
In addition, a fifth regulation focuses on creating a robust framework for the certification of the eID wallets. This framework is designed to ensure the security and privacy of users’ personal data. The introduction of these regulations marks a pivotal step in offering a universal, trustworthy, and secure means for individuals and businesses to identify themselves when accessing services across borders. Potential applications include opening bank accounts, proving age, renewing prescriptions, renting cars, or displaying flight tickets.
The implementing regulations will soon be published in the Official Journal and will take effect 20 days thereafter. This development signifies a major advancement in digital identity management within the EU, promising enhanced interoperability and security for users. Further details will be available upon publication in the Official Journal.
