Commission proposes digital passports and ID cards for easier travel
The European Commission has proposed a significant advancement in border control by digitalizing passports and identity cards for travelers entering or leaving the Schengen area. This initiative aims to streamline the process for nearly 600 million annual crossings and enhance security measures. The proposal includes a common framework for digital travel credentials and the introduction of an ‘EU Digital Travel’ app, enabling travelers to store and manage their digital documents on mobile devices. Importantly, this digital alternative remains voluntary and free of charge for all travelers.
Digital travel credentials will consist of the data stored in the chip of passports and ID cards, excluding fingerprints. The digital version will facilitate advance border checks, allowing authorities to focus on critical issues such as migrant smuggling and cross-border crime. This move is expected to improve the efficiency of border controls and offer smoother travel experiences by enabling travelers to pre-submit their digital documents for verification.
The proposed EU Digital Travel app will be accessible to both EU and non-EU citizens with biometric passports or EU identity cards. It will allow users to create digital travel credentials and submit travel plans in advance, expediting border checks. The app will operate with strict data protection measures, requiring user consent before processing personal data, and border authorities will receive specialized training in data security.
The adoption of this proposal now depends on the Council of the EU and the European Parliament. Upon approval, the development of the EU Digital Travel application and the necessary technical standards will commence. This initiative promises to reduce administrative burdens and enhance the overall security and efficiency of travel within the Schengen area.
