Commission Publishes Guide to Support Data Governance Act
The Data Governance Act (DGA), a key element of the European data strategy, celebrated its one-year anniversary with the European Commission publishing a practical guide for stakeholders. This guide aims to facilitate the implementation of the DGA, which enhances voluntary data sharing among businesses and citizens by ensuring secure and trusted data exchanges. The DGA, along with other measures under the data strategy, is designed to unlock the potential of data as a driver of innovation and job creation, crucial for the growth of organizations, particularly start-ups and SMEs.
The DGA’s impact is already evident, with 11 organizations registered as data intermediation service providers across the EU and one as a data altruism organization. Additionally, the European register for protected data enables users, including citizens, entrepreneurs, and researchers, to access information on protected data, such as health or mobility data, which cannot be made available under general open data rules.
The European Data Innovation Board has convened four times, gathering Member States and stakeholders to share best practices for implementing the DGA. The guidance document provided by the Commission is a comprehensive resource to help stakeholders understand and benefit from the DGA’s provisions. It is not legally binding but serves as an informative tool to aid industry, Member States, and other stakeholders in navigating the DGA’s measures.
The guide is periodically updated to incorporate lessons learned from the ongoing implementation of the DGA. It is available for download in all 24 EU official languages, ensuring accessibility for a diverse range of stakeholders across the European Union.
