Danish PM Pushes for 15-Year Age Limit on Social Media in EU

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has proposed that the European Union implement an age limit of 15 years old for social media use. This initiative aims to protect young smartphone users from harmful content and screen addiction. Currently, most social media platforms allow users to create profiles starting at 13 years old, a threshold Frederiksen argues is too low given the risks involved.

Frederiksen, along with EU lawmaker Christel Schaldemose, expressed their concerns in an article published in the Danish newspaper Politiken. They emphasized that 13-year-olds are still children and are particularly vulnerable to the dangers posed by social media. The proposal suggests that raising the age limit could mitigate these risks.

An essential aspect of this proposal is the implementation of effective age verification tools. Frederiksen and Schaldemose criticized tech giants for their lack of responsibility in this area. They argue that without robust age verification, the new age limit would be ineffective.

The proposal reflects a growing concern among EU lawmakers about the impact of social media on young people. If adopted, this measure could set a precedent for other regions and contribute to a broader effort to enhance digital safety for minors.
