EC Launches ProtectEU Strategy to Strengthen Internal Security
The European Commission has unveiled the ProtectEU strategy, an ambitious plan to enhance the EU’s internal security framework in response to evolving threats such as cybercrime, terrorism, and organized crime. The strategy focuses on fostering a comprehensive security culture, involving citizens, businesses, researchers, and civil society, while introducing a new governance framework to support its implementation. Key measures include regular threat analyses, improved intelligence sharing, and enhanced tools for law enforcement, including lawful access to data and updated encryption policies.
ProtectEU aims to strengthen the EU’s resilience against hybrid threats by securing critical infrastructure, reducing dependency on high-risk suppliers, and fortifying cybersecurity measures. The initiative also prioritizes combating organized crime through stronger legal frameworks, targeting financial networks, and protecting vulnerable groups such as children. Additionally, the strategy emphasizes the importance of addressing terrorism and violent extremism with preventive tools, tracking terrorist financing, and strengthening international cooperation on security.
The strategy complements existing EU frameworks such as the Preparedness Union Strategy and the European Defence White Paper, forming a unified approach to security. It highlights the need for bold and proactive measures, leveraging technology and fostering collaboration among member states, agencies, and trusted international partners. By equipping Europol and other agencies with operational capabilities, the EU aims to create a safer and more resilient Union.
The ProtectEU strategy underscores the importance of integrating security considerations across all EU initiatives, with regular reporting to the European Parliament and Council to ensure accountability. Through enhanced intelligence-sharing mechanisms and robust legal tools, the EU seeks to anticipate, prevent, and respond effectively to security threats while maintaining its commitment to democratic values and economic prosperity.
