EU forces Apple to comply with DMA interoperability rules
The European Union has issued preliminary instructions to Apple aimed at enforcing interoperability requirements under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple, designated as a “gatekeeper” under the DMA, is required to open certain iOS and iPadOS features to competitors. The EU’s measures focus on ensuring a level playing field by granting third-party access to functionalities such as peer-to-peer WiFi, NFC features, and device pairing. These measures are part of the EU’s broader effort to address concerns about competition distortion caused by Apple’s exclusive control over its platforms.
The imposed instructions include two sets of measures. The first set requires Apple to make features like AirDrop and SharePlay compatible with non-Apple devices, such as Android smartphones and third-party headphones. Additionally, interoperability must be extended to devices like smartwatches and internet-connected televisions. The second set of measures obligates Apple to enhance transparency and streamline processes for developers seeking access to iPhone and iPad features. This includes offering timely technical information, predictable timelines for requests, and updates to improve interoperability.
Apple has voiced strong opposition to the EU’s directives, claiming they hinder innovation and impose unnecessary micromanagement. The company warns that these measures may delay the rollout of new technologies within the EU, increase development costs, and compromise user privacy and security. Apple has raised concerns about sensitive data potentially being misused by third parties and claims that the European Commission rejected its proposed solutions to address these risks.
Failure to comply with the DMA’s interoperability requirements could result in Apple facing fines of up to 10 percent of its global turnover. While Apple argues that the measures may harm European users, the EU remains firm in its stance to enforce the DMA to ensure fair competition and transparency in the digital market.
