Apple to allow iOS app downloads direct from websites in the EU
Apple has announced plans to change iOS app distribution within the European Union by permitting certain developers to directly distribute their apps via websites. This move is set to occur following a software update slated for later this spring.
However, this new mode of distribution is not without its caveats. Developers must integrate within the stringent Apple app development ecosystem, adhering to Apple’s Notarization requirements to ensure platform integrity. Moreover, only apps installed from a developer-registered domain in App Store Connect will be eligible for this distribution method.
The installation process for these web-distributed apps will also introduce new steps for EU users. Prior to installation, users must authorize the developer within their iPhone settings. Additionally, a system sheet will display crucial app information for user review, as submitted to Apple. This process underscores Apple’s commitment to maintaining user safety and platform security, despite the broader distribution avenues now available.
Apple’s criteria for developers looking to utilize this new distribution channel are notably stringent. Eligibility hinges on being part of the Apple Developer Program as an organization based in the EU, maintaining good standing within the program for at least two years, and achieving over one million first annual installs for an app in the prior calendar year within the EU. These requirements, coupled with the necessity for transparent data collection policies and adherence to applicable EU laws, indicate Apple’s intention to limit this distribution method to larger, more established developers.
This development represents a significant shift in how iOS apps can reach users in the EU, bypassing the traditional App Store or third-party stores. While this opens up new opportunities for developers, it also introduces a layer of complexity in terms of compliance and user experience. Apple’s adjustments to its rules regarding external webpage links for digital goods purchases further reflect the evolving digital marketplace landscape, offering developers more flexibility in promotion and sales strategies.
