Commission asks for feedback on the use of data to develop AI
The European Commission has launched a consultation to gather expert opinions on the use of data in Artificial Intelligence (AI), the simplification of data rules, and the facilitation of international data flows. This initiative is a key step in shaping the forthcoming Data Union Strategy, designed to position the European Union as a leader in high-quality, interoperable, and diverse datasets essential for the advancement of AI technologies.
The Data Union Strategy will focus on ensuring coherence across EU policies, digital infrastructures, and legal frameworks relating to data. It aims to build on existing legislative and regulatory work, streamlining the environment for trusted cross-border data flows and the development of common European data spaces. The strategy will also strengthen the integration of these data spaces with the broader AI ecosystem.
A central objective of the strategy is to foster trust in data sharing practices, both within the EU and internationally. This involves enhancing legal certainty, reducing administrative burdens, and improving the interoperability of data systems. By doing so, the EU seeks to create a robust foundation for innovation while upholding its high standards for data protection and privacy.
Legal professionals and stakeholders are encouraged to contribute their views, as the consultation outcomes will directly inform the final strategy. The resulting framework will have significant implications for compliance, data governance, and the operation of AI-driven services throughout the EU’s digital single market.
