EC gives update on EU digital law enforcement
The European Commission continues to enforce the EU’s digital rules with a focus on consumer protection, innovation, and security. During the annual structured dialogue, Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, highlighted the progress under the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA). She emphasized the Commission’s commitment to decisive enforcement actions while respecting due process. Upcoming initiatives include DSA guidelines on protecting minors and a privacy-friendly age verification solution, expected before summer.
In addressing election integrity, the Commission provided updates on actions taken under the DSA to mitigate election risks and safeguard democratic discourse. Specific measures include proceedings against TikTok, enhanced content moderation, and a rapid response system. The Commission is closely monitoring developments in Romania and has extended TikTok’s data retention order. Discussions also focused on transparency in DSA enforcement and challenges like fake accounts.
On EU sovereignty and competitiveness, Virkkunen stressed the importance of removing single market barriers and increasing investments in innovation. In response to concerns about US interference in EU tech rules, she reaffirmed the fairness of EU regulations and the Union’s readiness to protect its industry and citizens. She warned against the risks of a trade war but assured that the EU is prepared to respond if necessary.
Lastly, the Commission is set to unveil its AI Continent Action Plan, addressing key issues like the Artificial Intelligence Act, a code of practice for AI providers, and the Digital Fairness Act. Discussions included risks of over-removal of content under the DSA and the potential simplification of digital regulations. These initiatives aim to balance innovation with accountability in the EU’s digital landscape.
