EU Commission slams Apple for holding back AI features to the EU
Earlier this month, Apple’s keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference focused significantly on AI features for the upcoming iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. However, these features will not be available in the EU due to uncertainties surrounding the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) which came into effect in March. This decision comes after the DMA prompted several concessions from Apple. Margrethe Vestager, the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for a Europe fit for the Digital Age and Commissioner for Competition, criticized Apple’s decision, suggesting it indicates the company’s acknowledgment of the anti-competitive nature of these features.
Vestager’s remarks were made during a Q&A session at Forum Europa, highlighting Apple’s refusal to launch its AI features in the EU due to the DMA’s obligations. She interpreted this as an admission by Apple that these features would hinder competition, a significant concern under the DMA’s framework. Although her comments were not part of an official press release, they reflect her consistent stance on the treatment of big American corporations in the EU market.
Apple’s response to the situation suggests a willingness to work with the European Commission to find a solution. The company expressed concerns that the DMA’s interoperability requirements might compromise user privacy and data security. Consequently, Apple has decided not to roll out features like iPhone Mirroring, SharePlay Screen Sharing enhancements, and Apple Intelligence in the EU this year. This cautious approach underscores the complexities of complying with the DMA while maintaining product integrity.
The future availability of these AI features in the EU remains uncertain. While Apple may eventually introduce them, the delay highlights the regulatory challenges faced by tech companies operating in multiple jurisdictions. As the situation evolves, it will be crucial to monitor how Apple and the European Commission navigate these regulatory landscapes to ensure compliance without compromising user safety.
