Commission Holds Special AI Scientific Panel Meeting
The European Commission is convening a special meeting of its Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence to address recent reported AI loss-of-control incidents. The meeting will focus on the safety and security implications of advanced AI models and the regulatory response available under the EU framework.
The panel, working with the EU AI Office, has prepared questions for the companies that developed the models involved. This engagement reflects the Commission’s focus on obtaining factual information from providers where AI systems may create serious systemic risks.
Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen will attend the meeting. She stressed that the EU’s legal framework for systemic AI risks must be supported by current scientific evidence, effective enforcement, and technical expertise as model capabilities develop rapidly.
The Scientific Panel consists of 60 independent experts advising the EU AI Office and national authorities. Its remit includes systemic-risk assessments, model classification, evaluation methods, and cross-border market surveillance. The panel will present recommendations to the Commission on frontier AI safety and security risks.
For lawyers and compliance teams, the meeting signals closer scrutiny of general-purpose AI models with potentially systemic effects. Providers should expect greater attention to risk management, testing, incident reporting, documentation, and cooperation with EU authorities under the EU AI Act.
