EU Commission Calls on Industry to Commit to the AI Pact
The European Commission has introduced the AI Pact to encourage early adoption of the AI Act’s requirements. Although the AI Act is expected to come into force within the next few months, many obligations will not apply until two or more years later. To address this transition period, the AI Pact aims to help organizations plan for compliance and promote the safe use of AI, especially with the upcoming European elections.
Launched in November 2023, the AI Pact encourages organizations to make formal pledges to work towards compliance with the AI Act. Participants are required to provide specific details about their current and planned actions to meet the Act’s requirements. The initiative is overseen by the Commission’s newly formed AI Office and is structured around two main pillars: knowledge sharing and facilitating company pledges.
Pillar I focuses on creating a collaborative community where organizations can share experiences and best practices. This includes workshops organized by the AI Office on responsibilities under the AI Act and preparation for its implementation. Pillar II encourages AI system providers and deployers to proactively share their commitments and progress, which will be published by the AI Office.
Participation in the AI Pact offers several benefits, such as fostering a shared understanding of the AI Act’s goals, increasing the visibility and credibility of safeguards for trustworthy AI, and building additional trust in AI technologies. The Commission’s initiative aims to ensure that organizations are well-prepared for the AI Act’s requirements and contribute to a safe AI environment.
