Fourth AI Act Correspondents Network Meeting on Article 50
On 6 October 2026, the AI Act Correspondents Network held its fourth meeting in Brussels, bringing together representatives from EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies. The network supports the EU administration’s preparation for compliance with the EU AI Act. Its latest meeting focused on Article 50 transparency duties, the EDPS Compass 2026–2027, and the EDPS AI regulatory sandbox pilot.
The discussion on Article 50 reflected the fact that most of its transparency obligations are now applicable. Dino Pedreschi, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Pisa and Vice-Chair of the Code of Practice working group on AI-generated content transparency, addressed the practical challenge of identifying AI-generated material. He outlined commitments for providers to mark generated content and make it detectable, while noting the technical and organizational limits of current methods. The session also showed the growing impact of EU rules beyond the EU, as major technology companies have joined the Code of Practice.
The European Commission’s AI Office provided an update on guidance for Article 50, including obligations relevant to deployers of AI systems. The meeting examined issues such as AI systems interacting directly with individuals and disclosure requirements for AI-generated text intended to inform the public on matters of public interest. Representatives from the European Court of Auditors and the Commission’s digital services department shared practical approaches to labeling generated content, staff guidance, and internal governance for AI tools.
The European Data Protection Supervisor also presented its Compass 2026–2027, published in March 2026. The document sets out the EDPS approach to supervising AI systems used by EU institutions, contributing to AI Act governance, strengthening institutional capacity, and engaging internationally. The EDPS now acts as the market surveillance authority for AI systems used by EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies, with enforcement powers under the AI Act.
Finally, the meeting considered the EDPS regulatory sandbox pilot under Article 57(3) of the AI Act. The sandbox allows participating EU bodies to develop and test AI systems in a controlled setting with EDPS guidance. Early engagement can help identify compliance concerns before deployment, while giving the EDPS practical supervisory insight. The network will next meet on 23 February 2027.
